Genealogy Software

You need to organize your data. The best way to do this is using a computer, which you probably have if you are reading this, and genealogy software. Start entering the data you discover into the software, and be sure to back up the data. Back up the data to CD or floppy, USB flash drive, whatever but make sure it not on the PC. You don't want your PC to crash and have to search for and enter all the data again.

Okay, there are a couple of good programs available on the internet. Legacy Family Tree is very good and you can visit Genealogy.com where you will find
Family Tree Maker. I am sure there are a couple more out there but this is a start.

Interview

Interview...that sounds a little formal, However that is what you need to do. Sit down with a relative, or pick up the phone and ask questions. Listen, Listen, Listen to the answers, record the conversation, if they don't mind. Where was Grandpa born? Did he serve in WWI or WWII? What was his rank? Did he receive any medals? Take a new direction, Did Granpa have any brothers or sisters? Where did they live? All of these types of questions will lead to new information and help you trace your family origins. Don't wait, If you put it off it will make it even harder to build your tree. Do it now.

information gathering

Starting the family tree can be a very exciting, and a very frustrating endeavour. The best place to begin is with your immediate family. Ask questions, many questions, request copies of documents, the information contained on these documents is your clue to the next document and the next member of the family.
